How typical landlords account for security deposit deductions?

Many residents often ask the question, “What does a landlord look for when making deductions from a security deposit?” Well, the folks over at Curbed SF just posted an article with a handy graphic showing many of the typical deductions that landlords look for, and also what qualifies as “normal wear and tear.” While there isn’t an exact formula for knowing what is normal wear and what isn’t, this should shed some light on some of the most common situations when a resident vacates a property. Plus, from our experience with judges in small claims court, this graph is pretty accurate.
